Dear Sis,
are you afraid of a black cat crossing your path-walking under a ladder, etc.
We are feeling better.
Cheryl Ann says she is going to school today. mainly cause she thinks she can go to the game tonite. We have our fingers crossed.
He, I deep forgetting to tell you, not to send Dr. Nevett any more money. I went to pay your bill, only to find you'd paid most of it-the rest is paid.
Dad went to Quorum meeting last nite at Charlo. The roads are really getting bad. Even the hi way is breaking up. Man, game time tonite is 7-we'll really have to rush it. I'd better do the same.

These are letters sent to my parents, Curt and Zelda through the years. Written in the days of long distances charges and 2-5 cent postage stamps. Sis. Andersan has been transferred; to Billings.
Have you heard from Ernie? We had a letter Letha says they will be up her soon-Ernie may get here, before he goes-I don;t know.
Are you sure the roommates won't mind a mother for a day or 2.

Dear Zelda,
How are you-did you get a good rest-or are you cramming' for exams?
Hope it isn't as dismal a day there, as it is here. It is raining. Oh me, if it would just let things dry up, then rain, it wouldn't be so bad. But it is so dirty, ugh.
I've had Barry and Cheryl Ann at home-Barry went to ball practice Monday nite and when he came home and had gone to bed he coughed something terrible. And Cheryl Ann had cramps-I left in the middle of the wash and dashed to town to get some prescriptions (Tuesday that is). Barry surely hated to give up and miss school. He was as proud of '0' days absent as his grades.
I've been afraid of pneumonia. Doc said he may have to come in every other day for shots for awhile. But he stayed pretty well, in bed Tuesday and Wednesday; he is going to school this morning.
Cheryl Ann is so weak-if she is up a few minutes she gets so faint, so I'll keep her home yet.
There are a lot of mumps around. Janice has them, Gordan had them; Stanley has them, and kids from nearly every room. oh me hope Cheryl Ann doesn't get them. There are a lot of colds and flu around to. Sis. Maughn has been quite sick.
Mr. Cr? was operated on a couple weeks ago; he isn't doing very well-has pneumonia.
Frank Berry died of a heart attack. Also Ted Evert of Ford dealers in Ronan.
Will write a letter. Me

Dear Zelda,
How are you we are fine.
The weather was chilly last nite.
I went to Blanches, when the others went to Mutual-we went to bed-then I went with her on the paper route-Galen has gone on a dairymans tour in Washington. I'm so sorry Dad couldn't have gone. We just got home 6:00 AM Blanche likes the Voltz Vagon, she drives it quite different than the Chev. Hope you are well -guess I'll go to bed now. Love Me

Dear Zelda,
How is every little thing?
Did you have the flu? Mom and she tho't you had not felt too well for a few days. Do hope you feel better.
We are all quite well here. I felt sort of rocky last week but I have no time to sty in bed as I fell better. It seems the older I get the more I have to do but I'm sure it just seems so, as I am slower each year.
We have a very nice spring day today. The clothes should dry nicely. Saw Waynnette yesterday. Her baby is due the last of the month. She looks good. Love from us.

Dearest Zelda,
Oh, but it was good to hear your voice! What little I let you talk-hardly let you get a word in edgewise, let alone lengthwise. I had the advantage-in a way, I was the one to 'sprise you; the tears in my voice came as an aftermath.
We aren't sure, yet, when the boys play-it will be the Pocatello 2nd Ward team, they say 'we hear most anything. In today's paper, it says the tournament in Logan, is the 16 thru 21st. And your busy week, darn The YWMIA are hoping it will be Saturday, as they have the "Dear To My Heart, program scheduled on Friday nite. Asking Pres. Patten about it-he said, "if it is Friday nite they boys play, cancel everything." He is really behind them.
Those trophy's really look good on the pulpit of the church.
Everywhere, anywhere, one hears basketball and what a 'sprise those Mission kids are. They surely surprised Anaconda-they thought they had it in the bag. And they are really a good ball club. When they see they were going down, they got rather rough; one of them elbowed Marty and really knocked the wind out of him. Lyle went down twice and Barry went down and turned a backward somersault, came up running' they really played a good game. They worked a new play Hugh helped them with. Anaconda's fatty-porky, they boys called him, who was guarding Dave, let him get in some long beautiful basket makers Thursday nit; so Hugh told Dave to fake a pass to the basket and the fellows would look to the basket, then he could get it in to Jay and he could lay it in. It worked beautifully. Jay was high point man. But who cared, as long as they get them there. Barry is usually tied up pretty tight-and he will be a better player as he gets some experience, not having played much ball before. It takes five to make a team. I guess that is why I got discouraged. Dana could make the baskets and Dad thought (and others) that was the team. I was just a guard-I quit.
See what I mean-everything is basketball.
Or Sunday School. We have two new families in the Ward. Adams aren't active-in fact he didn't want their baby blessed-he blows smoke rings around the ward teachers. The other family are better-I just saw them yesterday-in fact they came in our class, I don't know whether it is permanent or not.
If I do get to come to conference I guess I'll have to come in my old clothes and empty handed for you.
I missed Caulsen and Geneva yesterday, so ask Sis. Merkely about them, she said Geneva has had a complete nervous breakdown. They are stake missionaries and you know how much she puts into it just too much for her. I'd like to go down to see her when she is feeling better and can go home.
Lawrence and Irene are Stake Missionaries now. Gene Maughn is Primary President, Faye and Marjorie her counselors. Same teachers; Gladys is chorister, Elna, pianist.
Valeria got bit by a dog one day last week and is very sick.
Ruby Andersan is miserable, she says she just gains weight so easily-fluid in her system. She was out to church last nite.
Our Ward has a 16 MM projector! They run a film last nite, after church, while the Primary officers were being set apart. So, maybe I can get some film to use in our evening class. Leon will bring a catalogue Sunday.
Edna was out yesterday. She has decided to keep the Junior Sunday School coordinator job.
Let's see I don't believe there are any pregnant women here, right now.
Dana still hasn't had her baby.
Tom and Lilliam have the other two. Sometime they make one rather nervous in S.S. Class. I take playthings, but what one has the other wants.
Grandpa Coleman is feeling real well this winter, never misses a meeting.
Annie Kent is still away. Kate and Curt are home, I talked to her a minute last nite.
Leishmans are glad to be home.
Oh yes, Barry, Marty, Dave,Lyle Kirk, Gary S. Gary B, Howard, Russel, Bryce all got individual Aaronic priesthood awards last nite. Oh yes, Gaylord is a Stake missionary now!
Well, I haven't any more paper, and not much else to say, (bout time) so I send our/my love Mommie

My Dear Zelda:

They boys lost their game to Anaconda last nite-4 points. "Course it was rather a let down. Tonite they play Great Falls. If they win, they play Anaconda again tomorrow nite. Hugh Homer is home-he is coach now, rather late in the season, uh?
We are feeling better
Spring is on the way. You know what that brings.

March 2, 1959 Karene to Zelda
dearest Daughter:
How are you this 'blue' Monday? And the sky here this early morning is a beautiful blue, with a sliver of a moon and some bright stars shining. It is rather chilly.
March came in like a lion-it snowed some, the wind really whooped it up for awhile and it rained a little, then it cleared up and the sun came out for a little while and was cold last nite.
There was a Chinook Saturday and it really took the snow. So, you can imagine what we have now. It is really dirty.
Let's see now-I told you we went to the game Thursday nite, didn't I? Then we decided we wouldn't try to go down Friday nite, as our team played at 7:30. But when Dad came in at noon, we talked ourselves into it. So, the poor cows didn't know what it was all about at four o'clock.
Barry took our car and left at six, and took the team. We went with Tom and Lillian at 6:20. What a game-honestly! And what a noise we Missionites make. One of the referees said he'd never heard such a noise we Missionites make. One of the referees said he'd never heard such a noise. Our team played Simms, they had beat Helena the nite before. Barry felt much better and the five of them played the game.
Barry, Jay, Marty, Gary,& Dave. Gary was hi point man, Jay and Barry and Marty. Dave played good ball but he didn't make such as good scoring as usual. But we came out 8 points ahead. We had a good crowd down there. Stevensville played Anaconda at 9:30. Anaconda really have a ball club-man, they know how to handle that ball. And they are all husky fellows-we think they are fudging on their ages on some-we think. But Stevensville made a good showing against them-being the poorer team in our Stake. And Anaconda is the best team in either the Butte or Great Falls Stake.I think they beat Stevensville about twenty points or so. (Not much worse than the shelling BYU took here) Uh? Our team plays Anaconda this Thursday nite. I want to go, yet I don't. I told the boys if they beat them they would be entitled to the size 12 hats the Anaconda boys wear now. One of the referees (both from Pocatello)said, 'we aren't 'sposed to show any partiality, but we'd sure like to see St. Ignatius win. If we do, they may have to to put the roof back on the gym. Great Falls team lost their sportsmanship Saturday nite; the ref had to tell their coach off in no uncertain terms. And Thompson Falls won teh District tourney, in Polson, Saturday nite-over Libby-by 2 points.
Dad & Barry are getting over their colds. Cheryl Ann is going back to school today.
I'm washing, don't have a very big one.
Oh yes, I went back to Missoula Saturday morning to a Primary Preparation meeting, at 9:30 for officers. I went down with Blanche in the 'baby buggy' Dad says we are going to have one-Barry and I say 'oh no' I admit it would be so much cheaper, all the gas we use.
Well, yesterday I had a new class member-Bonnie. Next week Edna Rowley will be a member to. She lost her baby-she was in the hospital in Missoula-I just found out. The baby had been dead for some time. Even was decaying. She is giving the co-coordinator job up. I ask Dad if some thing had hurt her, why she was giving it up-no she wants to go in the genealogy class. He says several have talked about it-Learning it is a good class-not boasting, but like Geneva told me, accept compliments when due-but it is the members who have to do the work. How much are the tape recordings? I'm going to inquire and see if I can get a recorder.
Well, now it is about time for the kids to leave-I've been quite a while writing this-between clothes batches.
Hope you are feeling rested and well. Love you very much

Dear Zelda hope you are more rested than we are. And that you don't have colds as we do. We just can't seem to shake them.
we went to the game last nite-what a thriller-we saw Simms and Helena play first-then our boys and Great Falls came on-man their fellows were rugged. And Barry made the first score-a free throw. Then G.F. lead-even getting 11 points ahead at one time but we beat by one point! 36-37 Had a good big rooting section . They play Simms tonite.

Extra! Extra!
Mission J. M Men Champions!
The mission Ward Jr. M Men took the Championship in over time periods, Saturday nite.
What a game! Mrs. Neilsons broke a blood vessel in her palm, smacking it with her fist, shouting 'basket'. Mrs. Lee has dark spots on her knees, using them as smaking boards'.
Five little girls kept the gym ringing with yells-never have I heard five little girls make so much noise in my life. (Cheryl Ann, Betty Lou, Diana, Lois, Susan)
The Mission boys made the first basket, but in only a few seconds the Darby men had tied. Soon the Darbites were ahead five points-seven points-ten points.
The Missionites, and the sidelines, were almost having heart failures. The Mission boys played a ragged half-they just couldn't put the ball thru the hoop. They weren't playing 'team' ball. They were being very well guarded to-the Darby men were doing a very good job, of keeping the Mission boys in the center of the floor and they really had to fight to get a near enuf the basket to school.
They were pulling themselves together by the beginning of the fourth quarter. They were depending on Dave and Jay too much thru out the game. At the end of the game the score was 30 to 31 in favor of us, we thought-but the official said the last basket didn't count-so mission took a blow, but came up fighting. It was decided to play it off rather than come in again on Monday nite. It was a tense wait while the boys talked, gestured, planned and sucked lemons. The official came on and a hush fell-soon the boys were streaking down for a basket-no more hush. those ten minutes periods seemed almost as 'long as the game before. The Darby men were tiring, and decided to stall, but someone stole the ball and Mission broke ahead; bedlam broke loose-if it could be any worse than at times during the first game, man, stuff your ears.
Mission pulled ahead six, seven, eight, nime points!! And when the buzzer sounded-look out the roof may go! Oldsters were almost as wild as the five little girls.
The loosers were presented a ball-Stevensville got the beautiful sportsmanship trophy-Mission boys got the green and white suits.
They came home to find the school team had won their game-plowing them up in third play in conference play.
The big hope now, is to see the Mission boys play a 'team' game this weekend in the Tri-Stake tournament, Great Falls, Butte, Missoula Stakes. Then to Logan
Mrs. Lee hopes to get to go. but she will have to calm herself-she gets too excited-her hands begin to get stiff and her husband says 'take it easy Ma, it isn't life or death!
Do hope you are feeling well, sis. did you get a map yesterday? Whoops-Barry says, 'any letters."

Feb 20, 1959 Karene to Zelda
Dear Dear Zelda:
Dad finally took pity on me, and went down to get the mail-haven't had it since Sunday. It was so good to her from you! DO you have any snow left? Is it cold? According to the weatherman in Sat Lake, Wednesday morning, it was 45 and we were shivering in much less.
So, Edna is finally married-to the missionary? Seems she had a time to make her mind up. Is he, the husband, going to school? Too bad about Georgia-I know Edna said how she loved her sisters and hated so much the way things were with Georgia.
Thanks for the Genn-ee-ology. I wish I had a tape recorder. And wish I could use some film strips. I see there are some on the order blank I received yesterday. I need something Sunday; I don't know how I'm going to make a lesson out of 'Your Life in Pictures.' I've ask that each one have at least the first ten years of their history written in the first copy. And I gave them some outside reading to do. I ordered the 'Books of Remembrance' and thought surely they would be here by now-do hope they get here by Sunday. And I hope I can interest the members enuf to keep their thoughts and actions spurred to make them want to do something. It's like Dad said in his letter-yes, I finally had one from him; he was going in the Gospel Doctrine Class, he hadn't gotten much out of any there, genealogy classes he'd been in, but some of us didn't do much to help the teacher either.'So, these assigned activities have to be done individually, the teacher can't do anything about it.
Colene needs to get a job after school. Is she working in the church any? She has too much time to brood and think about Colene's troubles. Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
Oh, we have to go to a Primary Preparation meeting the morning of the 28th. So, I thought the 'Y' played in MIssoula that nite, so Blanche and I decided we'd take our husbands down-then stay and go to the game. I told Barry not to plan anything for that nite. Now, he says the tri-stake basketball tournament is on the same night. So, guess we won't get to the 'Y' game after all. We'd want to reserve seats, so we could be sure of sitting together, now don't know whether to or not.
Sounds like you are really going to summer school; I'd tho't maybe you'd be so tired of it your wouldn't go. But, I think to, that summer school may not be such a 'drag' (if you know what I mean) as these winter quarters. I'm glad you are enjoying your piano lessons. I don't know yet what your new class is. Good luck.
I don't know yet about Conference either. I told Dad I'd like a suit; but I can see I won't get one. In fact, I feel rather quietly about using the money, I feel like I should just send it to you. We have done nothing to help you this year. I can't even seem to get any sewing done. I don't know what I do with all my time. Well, when I stay in bed as I did yesterday morning, no wonder. But I had a tummy ache and such a time with my legs. (Let's see, I'll have to figure the time on a calendar to , to consider). Well if dates go as they should, that problem should be solved. I don't always know anymore. 'Anyhow' as I was saying, I stayed in bed. Rather, I went back after getting Dad's breakfast. Then I called Barry at six ten and he called Cheryl Ann when he left-so-I didn't get up until 10:45. I did do the machine mending. Now, if I had some darning cotton maybe I'd eventually get through the 'pile' of socks I have stacked up.
I'm glad you are getting some use out of my coat. I'm enjoying yours too
Life doesn't sound too dull in the apartment.
Congratulations!! Straight A's and working to-we feel really proud of you.
And you are so welcome to the aprons. Which ones do you like best-Cheryl Ann said some of them were too long.
I'm glad you were at home-I'm sure you need some rest time.
Now, for some ranch conn.
Things go along about the same. Dad spends all his days outside-he finishes breakfast, dresses (chore clothes I mean) and leaves the house about 5:30. He finishes the milking and washing up (you'd think I'd do that much for him at least) about 8:45 now. Then he goes out to feed silage all around. then he goes after a load of hay, and pitches it by hand. I think every week he'll get the loader fixed, but he doesn't. I think he is proud of his 'leaner' figure and afraid he'll lose it if he doesn't have that much manual labor. Mother should be doing some of that to. secretly she's afraid her freckles will sprout. Didn't I say 'conn'. Anyhoo, it is noon time he gets everything fed-he warms milk for a couple new calves-I've always told him they need some dinner and he agrees, they are doing better. Then he comes to dinner. I've been making him lay down for an hour. Then he goes to clean sheds, haul bedding or hay for the feeder and so on. (This week, he finally finished the tax after dinner & rest). Then it is chore time again. He has been milking earlier-he can't get the calves to drink well, and if he doesn't milk early , Bary doesn't have time, he usually has to go somewhere.
It seems so good to have chores finished by 7:15 or 7:30.
Barry and Cheryl Ann eat as soon as they get home. Dad eats if he is around, if not, when he comes in, Cheryl Ann usually does the supper dishes-unless we all eat, then I usually do them. She has to get wood in and feed the pets. She usually romps with Jigger a little while after dark Then she studies-if she doesn't get a good mark in arithmetic this time, I'm surely going to see Mrs. Siebert. if Barry is at home he studies a time or plays his 'geetar'. He is learning a few chords.
We have been going to bed earlier. Usually, that is is. And before we know it-it is time to get up again.
Wednesday morning Kenny called to say he'd be here after the cow Dad said he'd sell him-therefore I had to take the message out-he finally came; then got stuck. How or why he was down in the ditch no one knows. Anyway, Dad got the tractor & they spent an hour getting the truck out. So, he was an hour behind schedule all day.
Then yesterday the milk man didn't come. About 8:45 last nite he came. Dad finally had to go out, he was there so long. Then Bob got stuck. They tried to pull the truck-finally had to put chains on it, then pull some more. So, it was 10:45 when Dad got in. He was chilled and had a sore throat, so he soaked in the tub for half an hour. By then, Barry was home from Missoula. They had been down to play basket-ball. Winning!!and from Missoula 2nd Ward. Tomorrow nite they play the final game-either Missoula 2nd or Stevensville. They beat last nit by eleven points-33 to 22. Here's hoping they get those pretty green suits. Then the tri-Stake tournament, Great Falls, Butte and Missoula.
Oh, if Missoula 2nd should beat them (oh no) tomorrow nite. They play them again Monday nite-as it is a double elimination tourney.
One big, older fellow last nite sent Dave whirling and sprauling into the far wall. The referee called a foul and was the fellow mad. then Barry knocked the ball away from him as he was dribbling and he was madder. He talked to the ref for five minutes. Barry said he should have had his pants kicked and sent to the shower room.
Barry doesn't make much scoring-only four points last nite, said he missed all his foul shots. But, he plays a good defense under the basket. He and Jay are both good on the defense. And pretty good at taking the ball away. Dave has been the point man lately-12 points last nite. Doesn't sound like very heavy scoring-after seeing the 'Y' and other college teams. Not bad tho. 'course we've a bit conceited here don't you 'spose. We are proud of the kids tho. They are playing good team ball lately. Then they loose. Dave, Jay, Gary-the seniors Kirk, Barry, Marty,Marty, Lyle and who next year. They think maybe Gary Brooks and Berlin Anderson.
Barry was pleased to get a letter from you.!
We had one from Mom & Dad. They don't even sound the same in letters. They don't seem to be interested in anything much. I thought I could get them to write their histories, but I'm sure Dad has given up. I'll try again. Mom has been having back trouble again. I don't know whether she is still working or not. She had said the Sergeant would be released the middle of this month and they were going to California. Dad was saying, he'd like to go back to Morgan and go over some of the places he used to go when he was a boy. Wish I dared plan with them-to take Aunt Laura and me of course-this fall, and go down there. I'd like to get some pictures of places he knew, etc.. And I'd like to hear he and Aunt Laura talk of their younger days. I'd like t get over to Uncle Jim's. He has so much of the records on the Eddington side. 'I had written to Aunt Laura-
Sarah must have forwarded the letter on, as she wrote a card from Salt Lake.
Well, my goodness, here I am still gabbing to you. And it is almost time for the kids to leave. And I haven't pulled Cheryl Ann out yet. My word-it is 7:20.
But, I haven't gabbed to you for a day or two. Think I could stand it until June? May have to.
And I leave you with this that.
Love Mom

Feb.18, 1959 Karene to Zelda
Hello Honey, How are you? Do hope you are feeling better! We haven't had the mail for several days, hope there will be a card from you when we get it.
Are you 'blazing' a trail to school every morning at 7 A.M? What class do you have?
Do you 'spose I should write on apology to Colene ;haven't heard from her since I sent the puzzle letter.
Talk about blazing a trail-we have to whack one this morning-we have sixteen inches of snow. It has been snowing almost steadily since Monday morning. The bus had a little trouble last nite, even tho the roads had been plowed out-it was five o'clock when Barry came home.
Cheryl Ann is always five or ten minutes later. And I had hot biscuits, scrambled eggs and salad and pumpkin pie ready at 4:30 so we could all eat.
Dad and I ate, so he could get chains going. Blanche called to say there wouldn't be any Mutual. It isn't very cold-16 degrees this morning at 5:35. It is so funny to see Jigger in this deep snow-he holds his head up to keep his chin out of it. The Mama cat was out to the chicken coop yesterday morning when I called them for breakfast and she looked so funny coming along in the deep snow-he holds his head up to keep his chin out of it. The mama cat was out to the chicken coop yesterday morning when I called them for breakfast and she looked so funny coming along in the deep snow. She came weaving along a few steps at a time.
It is hard to get around with the tractor. Dad may have to put the blade on the Ford. Dave and Lyle have come on the Ford. Dave and Lyle have came after the tractor several mornings, to pull theirs out-they don't have any chains on theirs. Dad was rather out-of-patience yesterday-Dave broke the key off and didn't give Lyle the piece he broke off; and Dad needs that piece in order to have a new one made. They have Morings cattle over there, feeding them their hay. Tom never goes out to help. The boys got up real early to get thru-but Lyle didn't make it to school yesterday.
Mom and Lillian have been out to Dana's expecting another one and doesn't feel very well.
Grandma Pierce had a stroke. Then she developed pneumonia and went into a coma last Saturday. She didn't regain consciousness: She passed away at midnite Sunday nite. Her body is being brot back here and services will be held Saturday. I think she would have been 84 in a month or so. She has lived a long, full life. And has been ready to go ever since Bro. Pierce died eight years ago. I'm sure there must have been a happy reunion in heaven. But how badly they must feel to look down and see the way some of their family are living.
Annie Kent is still away. I don't know if she is in California or whether she came back to Idaho. I'm wondering if Sis Pierces services will bring her home.
Grandma Lee is still out to Elizabeth's. She had some more trouble with her legs last week. But she was out Sunday.
Johnny has been sick and was so cranky Sunday-must be getting better. Halen has quite a time of present-the papers are late and the snow is deep, and the roads are slick. And yesterday they tipped the farmhand over. Then when Ernie helped get it right side up, they broke a hose and had to go to Ronan. So, we aren't the only ones to have trouble.
Oh me-the weather man says the wind is going to blow and snow will dift.
Course it may not her. It is do different her. But it would surely drift in soon, as it is a light snow on top. It is so pretty.-it is just getting light. There is a foot of snow piled on some of the branches, of the big spruce, right out to the end and the green tips hang down-looks like a big hand with fingers outstretched and lon nails, hanging down. Every fence post has a tall hat and all teh little twigs and granches are pile high with snow. In the limbs close together the snow is about eight inches deep and the lilac bush is so pretty. The 'strip"around the car is about all we can see of it.
Cheryl Ann was so out-of-patience yesterday morning 'cause I made her wear her snow pants. But I think by the time she got in last nite, she was glad she had them on. I wish Barry would wear a hat! He does wear boots now. His gloves that were too small, were never sent. I finally got a letter saying they didn't have any and weren't expecting anymore.
This xmas was a disappointement as far as shirtsm gloves, blouses and pajamas were concerned. I'll just have to get cotton 'jamas-no more of hte softies. So maybe by your birthday, you'll get your xmas. AS it was at Valentines day-Xms too.
I haven't heard from Mom. She doesn;t write very often. I've wondered if she decided we didn't want any part of the troubles over there and dedided we weren't good listeners. Well, I can listen; but I really can't help matters. So, why get into any discussions. She did say, in the last letter some time ago (oh, we've had a couple of cards since) that Sis. Carbine thought Harold should fight the case, and that he should get the kids. What would he do if he should get them, but I can't think he would. Guess Dana has quit working. Such a mess. And Charles didn't even come home for dinner the nite of Dad's birthday dinner at Dorthy's. I just wonder how long the folks will stand up under the stress, strain, and worry. I think probably it has made a difference even in their own relationship.
A Mr. Emry, in Missoula, got in an argument with his wife and sister-in-law, a Mrs. Hefty. He shot the women, killing them both and then tried to cut his throat-he is in the hospital in fair condition.
Some of these clippings are older.
I'd like the one about Neal saved, please. There have been a number of benefit activities for them. I think the benefit games raised about $250. And a pancake supper brot in $200.
Hugh Homer has served two years-he will be home in a week or so.
Faye's mother has cancer-skin cancer-it is spreading, on her face, neck & back. Faye takes her to Missoula for treatments.
Whoops-phone-
Kenny-must go out to give Dad a message.
Hoping you are well-
Love Your Mommie

Feb 16, 1959 To Zelda from Karene
Dearest, Darling Daughter; how's my honey this A.M.? (do you like corn?)
Your most welcome letter and card came-just got them yesterday. Thank you, from all of us, for your sweet thoughts and cute valentines.
Sounds to me like you are about done-in-or sick.? Come-on tell Mommie all.
What is your new class, this quarter? Sounds like the harmony class is interesting. Did you get thru the snow, Friday morning.
But you don't beat me up anymore! We have breakfast at 4:50 A.M. My lazy days are over-rather, I should say, my morning naps are over; I'm up until eleven, man, getting up is terrific. And we had to have sandwiches, hot chocolate with ice cream, and and cookies, after we came from church-so, it was 11:25 when I went to bed. Barry had Dad trim his hair, so they were up as late as I. Cheryl Ann didn't go to bed much before. So, Barry didn't go to chore until 6:45-he will sure have to hurry this morning. I had to pull Cheryl Ann out, put her slippers on start her-but she flopped, on your bed.
I took her part way downstairs. I made her bed so she couldn't get in again, as she did one morning.
Your parents are getting on more ways than one.
We even forgot to pay the power-bill; so Dad gave Alice a check last nite so she could take it in this morning. Dad says he gets more done, when we eat early-but still does chores all day. I manage to get a better meal, at noon, than at two or two-thirty and get the dishes done before time to get supper for the kids.
We got another new calf the other nite; but sold it the next morning for thirty dollars. It was a bull calf. The one month old calf isn't doing to well-Dad got more medicine for it yesterday, hope it helps. The others are doing all right-they are in the 'gawky' 'rough' stages and aren't very pretty at present. Pot-bellies, oh me. But,they are always so at that age.
The cows are about as ornery as ever-and Butch is no help anymore-more of an aggravation. He sure hates to go out.
The horses have it all to themselves, in the lower pasture. They have long hair, and fat as ever.
Gertie is destructive-she wrecked the doors of the stable. So, she goes 'out'now. Dad fixed the doors, with her on the outside. She is so funny. She grumbles and scolds while Barry feeds the calves.
The boys have won all their games so far! They are a bit worried about Thursday's game-play Missoula 2nd and they are rough. We want to go down-but game time is 7:30. I told Dad he'd have to start to mlk at 3:30. Sure hope they win and get the suits. Then they will be in the Tri-Stake conference.
Ruby Anderson was out to meeting last nite; she says she just has to get out once in awhile even tho miserable.
Ella Mae had her boyfriend (one of them) to church. Do you know the Faust twins from Missoula? And Beverly was with the other one-she acted so bashful and funny.
Just had a card from Mom, last week; she doesn't write so often anymore.
Darn-bought this new tablet-thought it was lined, I looked, the first page was; some deal.
Had a letter from Rosie. They are all well. Did you know Ron and Dawn have a boy.?
I wrote to Aunt Laura, but find she is in Salt Lake. Gwen has been in the hospital. All relatives are hearing, unexpectedly from me-genealogy, pictures. !!!We had 100% attendance at class, yesterday. Even Tom was there. Hope he will coutinue, makes an even dozen with myself.
We had a chinook wind Saturday, taking much of the snow. We are all well-have to quit now.
Love Mom

My dear:
Good morning.
Hope you got some rest yesterday. And that you don;'t have a cold or anything bothering you.
we are all fine.
Dad is always busy doing the same ole things.
Had a new baby, but it's Mommie didn't get up to dry it off, so it wasn't alive when Dad found it. The others are doing okey.
Barry and Chryl Ann do about he same things to. Me-I don't accomplish much of anything. This has been the laziest winter yet.
Went to Missoula yesterday.
Now, must go-Barry is coming there.

Good Morning;
How are you this crisp winter morning. Yes, we have a winter wonderland again. It snowed most all day yesterday-at times it was heavy-coming straight down and big flakes, it was beautiful. Dad hauled hay a good share of the day. And I don't even help him. I studied Sunday School lesson until 1:30, then did my work and made bread. It seems I don't study when I'm thinking about it. I loose some of the things that come to mind. In fact, I studied Tuesday morning and practically all day Monday. I have only taught an adult class once before-theology in Relief Society, and it really makes me dig! I don't know much about genealogy anyway. Dad and the Bishop have cautioned me not to worry so much about it. I'm learning, but I want the others to enjoy learning to. And I've heard so many remarks that"I've attended genealogy classes before but haven't gotten a thing out of it.' Any ideas?
This will be the review of lessons so far briefly-on the board I've hung two black pieces of cloth (curtains) one on the right and one on the left. The peoples of the world do not know what happened before birth. And as man struggles thru life it seems almost meaningless (if they think) to some. And they travel over a rough road wandering and not knowing what happens after death. To we as Latter Day Saints, revelation has made us realize and know , so it lifts the yellow curtain and we know that our earth life is a time of proving ourselves. We know that in our pre-earth life-(curtain lifted) we were intelligences and God gathered and organized the intelligences and we became spirit children of God. We were all present at the Grand Council and agreed to the earth-plan and sanctioned the appointment of our Elder Brother as the Savior of the world. Satan rebelled & a third part of the organized spirits, who were chosen to come to this earth, came with him; punished by not having a mortal body. So, we are here to 'prove ourselves. Then when we leave this earth life we are a spirit and will be resurrected being. And we want to reach the goal of eternal life-knowing God and becoming like him.
I learned from Sis Anderson that Avil is enjoying the class and also from Ray! I hope I can do justice to everyone.
Hey-I went to see Naida. Heard no secrets. Went to see Delma to.
Getting some genealogical sheets to every ward member for a ward family book. It is most interesting.
Looks like Sunday School is about all I'll get in this morning. Time to go

Tuesday, Feb. 3
Dearest Daughter:
Your mother is really slipping,uh. Here it is almost a week since I wrote last. You see, it has been like this-on second thought I'll spare you all the excuses.
I'll try no to let it happen again. But, maybe it's a relief, uh? 'Kiddin
We haven't had our mail for a couple of days, so we think there might be a letter from you.
How's your 'sagging 'moral? don't feel bad-yours isn't the only one that says. Mine has been so low that last few days. I stumble over it. I've decided I'd better boost it up somewhere before I bump my nose.
Don't worry about the 'pieced'letter-just read Colenes-they were almost the same. (Should have heard Dad)
Are you still having beautiful April weather?
I'm glad the owner's have done something to the house. I've thought how it could be fixed up. Glad you have some curtains in your room. I've wanted to send some, but my finances are nil. (Grey hairs)
Do hope the 'Babe is fine now.
and that you have sufficient 'efficient' help.
So did Alvah get the idea?
Hope you are having some good times.
I'm so glad to know that Emily is really happy. I just hope they can make the adjustment to Gail Lyme-how did Emily's folks feel about it all?
They will miss the little gal. I'm glad, especially for Emily's sake, that Louise's folks gave them a reception and are feeling better toward and about the marriage.
What brought Curt and Kate down that way-anything special or serious-it was such weather when they left here.
Congratulation-you are a Relief Society teacher! You needn't worry about giving a lesson-you can make one so interesting. I wasn't at home when my teachers came last week
If I could sleep some, for you! It worries me-your not getting some sleep, I mean Going to sleep while practicing the piano. Maybe you'll have to play sick one day, and just sleep.
Nice of Gary to send you a gift. How many more days? Faye always wants to know if I've heard from you.
Virgie, hadn't had her baby yesterday. Bertha said, last nite, she was going to have a big one.
We finally had a letter from Earl, saying he got the money for Xmas. I don't know-I had rather a strange feeling when I read his letter. Do you think he will really, down deep, appreciate his mission and all it can mean? He said to tell you he'd like a few lines from you. And don't send a postcard with a few lines on it. That was so funny. and it reminds me-on the Hush Hush, if you want a picture of your brother, you have to earn it-by writing him a letter.
I don't know how much "learnin" her and Chreyl Ann are doing. They bring books home almost every nite. Barry studied well until the last couple of weeks and he has been away, it seems almost every nite. Cheryl Ann really tried hard for a better mark in arithmetic last six weeks, but got the same D.
I was rather out-of-patience with Mrs Teihert I really think she earned a better grade-by her daily papers and her six week test. Dad said, " I should go in and talk to her. Cheryl Ann cried because she thought she would at least get a C.
It was rather discouraging for her, cause she doesn't like 'rithmatic anyway.
Otherwise, she had a good card, cost me $1.60 which I haven't been able to pay yet. As long as I can't pay she can't spend it. One thing I'm glad of, she pays her tithing. She always looks for Earl Brooks on Fast Day.
I don't know about Barry-I have a hard time getting him to talk about some things. He is causing some concern and a grey hair or two. I guess I'm just a corny mother to him.
He sat up to read, after the rest of us were in bed; and I finally got up to find him sound asleep in the rocker. Now, I'm having a one sad time to get him up. Dad called him before he went out. I told him he'd better stay home tonite and go to bed and 'course that didn't set too well. But, darn, he only goes to Mutual anymore, when there is something special-tonite their classes (Jr. Gleaners) are 'sposed to have a party. Come on, Ma, quit blabbing.
I'm 'sposed to go in for Primary today. They are in a quandary, now, as to a chorister, having finally released Elda to give her the secretary work-Marie the historian work.? And, so-if I go-I think I'll just stay with Cheryl Ann-as I'm 'sposed to meet Roy at Mutual. I had ask him to visit our genealogy class next Sunday and give a story, and he wants to see the lesson material, etc..
I don't know where I slipped up Sunday, I just haven't felt satisfied with the way the lesson went over. Kent slept during part of it, maybe that is what bothered me. He slept all through church to. Maybe he has been up at nite lambing or something. And, it just wasn't a lesson that I could adapt to a discussion-more a lecture type lesson. I'm hoping next Sunday will be better. Course Dad just gets after me for worrying. And I try to use him as a sounding board for some of my material and he goes to sleep. Here I go again. One day I'll write a letter with out any grumble. If you have any ideas that I need, send 'em along-and I need plenty.
Leelain and Tom are going out to Tacoma, Thursday. I wouldn't be 'sprised if the brought the little ones back with them for a time.
Grandma Lee is at Elizabeth's now. I don't think she is gong to stay there very long. She is feeling better-she was out to church Sunday. Do me a favor will you, when I get old see to it that I am clean and neat and do something with my hair. (Mother, what are you saying?)
I believe you'd better burn this letter. Maybe I should burn it before I send it. I just have to 'let off" steam sometime.
Let's see-dad and I went to Polson, Tuesday to get the license. Dad says:It sure takes a little time to take a lot of money. And then again he paid the insurance on the truck and car. We haven't dared write a check since-he says when we get the mail we'll be overdrawn. Let's see, when is the 10th.
Every check, I hope I can take 50 bucks out, but not yet. I've about decid3ed to see if I can get a job. Dad says he'll give me one-but no money there.
How are you doing? Do you have financial blues too. I feel like a stinker. And you don't even give me a pattern number-I still have a few pieces of print on the sewing barrel. Cheer up-I'm okay. Even if I am nuts.
Wednesday I met Blanche at the store and we went to Polson to Primary. Gilen, Betty Lou, Elizabeth and Lois were along. we took the car and when we came back to town a couple hours later, poor Lizzie was sooo-o tired. She didn't even go to get a chiropractic treatment-and that's where we thought she'd spend her time. It was funny by the time we got home. But I think Blanche loses patience with her.
Thursday we had the freezer installed (no money? well I think I've explained that-no money on it). I don't know whether I told you about the scratches on the first one-so Bud ordered a new one. then when they uncrated the new one out here, the tip of it is marred badly in several places. but he said he'll put a new door on it. Dad went to the store Friday to empty the locker boxes and I spent a couple hours arranging and rearranging in the freezer I threw some corn away-have corn from "54. And I found a dozen boxes of peas, you picked and shelled, and more strawberries! I found two fryers and a rooster and some Swiss stake. (We had fried chicken Sunday.) The freezer is almost full. And we still have half a pork to go in it. And Dad wondered if we shouldn't get a smaller freezer. I ask him, when he came in,where I was going to put the bread, cakes and so forth.
But we will use more now it is handy. In fact, things may disappear too fast-'specially the strawberries mmmmm. They are good. Every time I take some out I wish I could get you some (some to you I mean)I finally did the two weeks wash. The only thing I don;t like about the freezer is that it is so long. I can't get the dryer door clear open. Someday I'll have it turned around.
So, I finally go started to iron at 10:30 Saturday nite. And ironed shirts, blouses and pillow slips until one o'clock. Had a bath; then finished my material for Sunday School.
Guess I caught a cold somewhere along the way. I didn't do anything yesterday. Maybe all the pills had something to do with that. But I feel better this morning.
Our weather is-murky.
The trees look so bare, the snow is almost gone again. The mud is-ugh-terrible. I tell Dad-we have it every year.'It isn't cold. And a 'gear out of the truck so I can't get sawdust,' says Dad. Hope the part will be here today. So goes life on 'mountinside'. How goes it there?
Love you muchly xoxoxo Mom

Guess I caught a cold somewhere along the way. I didn't do anything yesterday. Maybe all the pills had something to do with that. But I feel better this morning.
Our weather is-murky.
The trees look so bare, the snow is almost gone again. The mud is-ugh-terrible. I tell Dad-we have it every year.'It isn't cold. And a 'gear out of the truck so I can't get sawdust,' says Dad. Hope the part will be here today. So goes life on 'mountinside'. How goes it there?
Love you muchly xoxoxo Mom

January 20, 1959 Karene to Zelda
Dear Sis:
We are all feeling fine. Hope you are feeling okey to. Did you get a nap yesterday?
So you are having a bit of snow? Wish we did. Friday morning a chinook came along and by Saturday afternoon our ten inches of pretty white snow was all gone, except on the lawn where the breeze doesn't it so directly. I've never seen snow go so fast here. Cause now we have mud almost as deep. Where the cattle tramp it is as deep or worse.
It was nice to feed on the snow they cleaned their feed up much better.
The cows came up on their milk on the Idaho hay. It is really pretty hay-the leaves are all there, so green & the blossoms are still purple. No dust or mold. One has to be careful not to feed too much or the cows bloat.
Saturday, Dad & I took Bob & Helen to Missoula to get groceries, before the Priesthood meeting at 6:30. Barry had gone so much-so he did the chores. the ladies sat around a talked until 9. Then went to the husband& wife meeting.
I really enjoyed Elder Dyer. Yesterday, Barry went down with David & Lyle to the morning meeting. Then we went to the afternoon meeting-Dad called Tom to say we'd be along and pick them up and they were ready. I enjoyed the Saturday nite meeting more. We went to Sacrament meeting last nite. It froze just a little last nite. Wish it would snow. Hope all is well with you.

Jan 19 1959 to Zelda from Karene
Sunday Jan 18
How are you this evening? Have you had a nap this afternoon? I 'spose you went to Sunday School this morning.
Just read your card when i got in the car to go to Sunday School. Barry gets the mail, once-in-awhile, and leaves it in the car. Was the bakery the killer-diller you expected?
Yes, we are all well.
Kate said this morning they'd see you this weekend. Ask if I wanted to send anything-"yes, I'd like to send me-I thought but didn't say it to her.
She said Joe (and wife?0 took you, Elaine and Joe to dinner.?
Barry and Dad went in the little car-Cheryl Ann and I went in the other one. It was to be preparation meeting in Missoula, so both cars. Bro. Skaggs called-I was in the office so answered the phone, to say there wouldn't be any today. So, Barry got home before we did. He had the chicken hot-spuds were baking and he had the table set.
I taught the genealogy class today again. Hope they soon sustain a teacher. Had four new members in class today. Think we'll have to move out of the office, getting too small.
Next week will be conference in Missoula. Guess Joe will stay to have Sunday School here if anyone comes.
Grandma wasn't out. Blanche has her out to her place-said she wasn't very well. Legs giving her trouble again yesterday.
Blanche has her furnace now. Makes a difference in her house. No parts yet, from Salt Lake, for Grandma's furnace.
Barry went to Polson last nite to a game-Mission lost. He caught the club bus at Post-Creek-took Judy home after. But was home at 12:30.
Saturday morning they did the feeding before coming in-then Barry took grain to town after breakfast. Dad spread 'Sunshine'
Friday at 10:30 the hay came in-22 1/4 ton. Some more than we expected. It is very pretty hay. Dad said the tank stick read quite a bit more today. We hope the hay will help pay us back the $522. Mr. Mielke is quite a talker. I was afraid he wasn't going to eat his dinner.
No one went to Missoula Friday nite. They have some slick roads down that way-just said there was a four car crack up near Milltown. Four people in the hospital. And he said they caught some MSU men trying to hoist a garbage canon the flag pole at the court house-just about a year ago. It was accomplished & no one even knew how it got there.
Moss's are going to have their baby operated on. There are ten men going down Thursday to give blood-then Moss's get credit for the donations in Spokane. Dad is signed up to go.I don't know what day the operation will be.
Say, while I think of it, how old do girls have to be when called on a mission? I think it is 23, but don't know for sure.
And do you have any more small pictures, of yourself, that were taken at graduation time. I'm trying to get a 'Book of Remembrance' started. Andy trying to stir up some pictures. I get started on a history, then decide it isn't right, so start over. Don't know whether I'll ever get one written or not.
And another thing you ask if I'd like a book on psychology? Do you have one?
The PCA Banquet will be in Ronan this Friday. Dad ask if we were gong-I don't know-if he goes Thursday, 'course we don't have to haul cow hay now, for a time anyway. They made it into the feeder with part of a truckload. The rest, and a trailer load they stacked out here, north of the house, in the pasture, inside the gate you know.
My goodness, sounds like Freddie is mad at Barry, I wish they would put him back in the pasture. He is getting too cocky.
Jigger was out with Cheryl Ann and about the time she was to come in he decided to go hunting. It was after dark when he came back, full of snowballs. While we were gone Tuesday he used your bed. It is a nice bed. I've used it a couple times for a nap. I am gong to buy a new mattress for our bed-both our backs have been bothering us. I deep saying I feel guilty not helping you- then too I keep saying I'm going to buy this and that. Oh me.
Have you ever looked for a pattern you'd like made up? I could at least help you that much.
cold, snowy north!? But it is warm. Wish you were here, we'd have a snow ball fight. I hope it stays like this for some time. It has been degrees colder in Missoula. The roads here are snow packed, the hiway was practically clear when we came home.
Well, it is time to get ready for Church. Oh yes-your records are down there aren't they?
Tell Colene hello-it's her turn to write. But I'd write her again. Hey the Y team got pushed around Friday-but played better ball last nite.
Love you Me
(this letter in the same envelope)
Good morning-how are you this Monday morning? Hope you slept well.
Hey-what about Emily?
Is she married-when? Where?
Do you know how the students and professors pronounce genealogy, down there.
gen al ogy
as in (jen) (all or al)
or as in (jean) (al)
I'm a lot of bother aren't I.
Something else I thought of in the nite, but can't remember now what it was. Probably a good thing.
We had a pretty good church-Leon was visiting heigh councilman. Bill McEntire his companion.
The choir aren't what it used to be.
Mrs. Bradford was sustained as a teacher for the little ones.
Mrs. Lee was sustained as genealogy teacher. My word no one has said anything to me. Roy said, "it looks like we have frightened Karene! I just hope I can stimulate some one each week to go home and read a little. The class period is not near long enuf to cover a lesson very thoroughly. I'm going to ask if we can stay and dismiss in class-the Junior Sunday School does that now.
Well, I'd better write a note to Mom. Haven't heard from them for a time.
And I let the time get away from me and today is Grandpas birthday.
Love you Mom

Dear Zelda-
We hear you arrived in Provo okay. You rode in a new car, huh?
Did Joe go with you or does he have a car?
we did enjoy or short stay with you so very much. Hope it will not be so long before we see you again.
The Third and Fourth Wards moved into the new building yesterday. From what I heard they had quite a mix up. Have you seen any of the Moses Lake kids?
We had some snow after we came home but it has rained everyday for a week adn last nite it rained all nite so no more snow.
Today it cleard some and a breeze blew so it was agood wash day. I had a two weeks wash and the clothes dried nicely.
How are you doing since the holidays? Hope everything is going well for you
We were certainly shocked to hear of Pat's death.
A shock for everyone. Sometimes things happen so quickly.
I am sitting with Jeff and I think it is about time for his mother to come home.
Do hope and pray you are well and happy as can be away from home.
Love from all here Grandma and Grandpa [Eddington]

Dearest Daughter;
Your most welcome letter came Tuesday, and I'm just getting 'round to answering it. It has been post card week. To Grandma to.
It was very nice of Colene to come pick you up at work. And to bring you some supper. I rather think she is longing for a friendship that brings love-a nice quiet love. And you aren't usually a nervous person-you are steady. And she likes you very much. And you can visit with her on a common ground of understanding about life, religion and so on. Glad you had a nice evening and nite with her. And Elder Olpin is missing a good chance,'so we say"!
I'm wondering if Frank and Zella have been there yet.
Have you seen Alvah? Maybe he found another girl at Christmas.
Are there just four of you in the house now?
I talked to Ralph some, Sunday nite. He feels awfully bad about Pat. I think they don't feel very friendly toward Neilsons and daughter. Louise came within a few feet of him but didn't speak. Ray called Dad in a week ago and asked him if she was still teaching Sunday School-'yes'-'well she shouldn't be. I guess the hay ride got to be rather a joy ride for some. Sunday morning-no it was the day after-anyway he found beer cans everywhere-even in the kitchen. And he ask Ada about it-'the Sunday School had nothing to do with it. So Ray called Louise in. She was very innocent. But according to some of the kids she wasn't so much so. Bobbie Cartes made this statement,"I've gone to a lot of Mormon parties and had a good time, but they are getting too rough for me."
Dad heard in Ronan that Pat had been drinking. All in all it hasn't made a pretty picture. Barry says he is so glad they left early. Where things started to go wrong and how, no one knows for sure. Anyway, Louise was released from her Sunday School class. Barry says she 'brot it on herself. We find the two little Maughn boys are not angels. Gary S. Said to Blanche he wasn't going out with them. I guess they even got him to taste a drink. I ask Barry if he had ever tasted it and he was so positive, I surely believe him. I ask him if Judy smokes and he said, "no, or I wouldn't be going with her-if anything disguists me, it is to see a girl smoke, it's bad enuf for fellows"I hope he always feels so. I think you'd better burn this letter so now one will ever hear a conversation even the onesided.
Marie is feeling pretty good. She says she will write to you. She appreciates your going down to help her family. The baby didn't do too good for a time, but she said they were in Monday nite and it was looking better. She expects to have it home one day.
Yes, we listened to the game. Montana had last oomph. Maybe they will get back at them when the Y comes to Missoula-28th of February?
Yes, it was cold. Then it rained and was warm and muddy. Then we had a few nice days-shirt sleeves weather. Last nite it started to snow-this A.M. we have about five inches of pretty white fluffy stuff. All we need now is some wind and we could or would stay home.
Thanks for the hankies. And I opened most of your xmas presents from the 'little man'
Do you know what they marinated the fruit in for the fruit cake-or what liquor they put in it. Good!
So back to the ranch. We are all fine. Sunday was a full day, so Monday Mother was pooped. Tuesday, Dad took the porker in to the slaughter house. I went to town to Primary. Wilda came out until Mutual time. Cheryl Ann wanted to go to the show, so Dad and I went in-I went to visit Ruby, who is miserable always-she weighs 172 pounds now, poor thing. Dad had a conference with the Bishop. Then the kids were to dance so Cheryl Ann decided no 'Jerry Lewis'-so Dad & I went to visit Grandma. She had had some trouble with her legs, but they were better-then she caught cold. Barry didn't go to Mutual.
Wednesday Dad started on the 'chimney. Bud, from Gambles came out to visit-Dad had looked at a freezer the day before, so Bud came to see where we we're going to put it. Guess he'll bring one out next week! I think it foolish to get too small a one-and the big one is long enuf that I won't be able to open the dryer door wide.
We haven't any money-Bud is going to 'buy a beef from us, then take delivery when it is ready.
Grandma called to say she wanted Dad in at 7:30-Art was going to be there to do something to the furnace again. We had Ward Teachers, and she called to see if Dad had left-it was too late for him to go. Some part was wrong so she had no furnace. Dad said he' go get her, but she said 'no.' and her blanket quit. Joe and Barry went teaching too.
I finally got around to doing the wash-the poorest day in the week for drying. But didn't have too big a wash, so got it all dry& a few pieces ironed. I studied Sunday School lesson between batches, so some of them stayed a bit longer than need be. I had the lesson books to S.S. and no one wanted one-'oh we have one like that'-so no one could find them, so I had to prepare the lessons. Wilma has quit, so I'm taking it until they get a teacher. Me teach genealogy. But I got 'lots' of complicents-two or three-Kent Homer asked Grace to teach the class-without a word to anyone. The class doesn't want her-she is still teaching a class-and Dad was out-of-patience. He said some had ask to have me as teacher (I can't even blow my own bugle to you without blushing)anyway, I'm to give the lesson again Sunday. There will be Conference in Missoula on the 25th.
Sis. Browning is one of the new teachers, Alice Jo will take Lousie class Dad thinks.
Brownings talked in meeting Sunday nite. She reminds me some of Aunt Kate. Both interesting people.
Let's see-oh yes, we have a new calf and it cries all the time. I think it is lonesome. And I don't think Barry feeds it enuf. Nor does Dad think so. It needs some dinner. Its Mother is a heifer he got from Kenny-she is mean and doesn't give much milk-and 275 bucks. I could tell him 'I told you so: as I tried to get him to stay home instead of going to Kennys.
We have expected a load of hay from Idaho this week, but he hasn't come yet. Don't know why.
Well, it is about time for the Barry to say 'any letters today. So, we'll say 'love you muchly' Mom

Maybe you won't get my last card until today. No one went past the mailbox ll until today.Barry went down to the game this morning.so it didn't get to town. It was a most beautiful day Saturday-spring fever. At 8:30, all of a sudden it started to rain, and rained hard for an hour.It rained the same yesterday morning and sprinkled during the day. I had to teach the genealogy class yesterday morning. And Arvill Anderson was in there-scared me to death But I got some compliments and I don't know wot to do with them. Blanche, Faye & I-Betty Lou and Madge went to Missoula with Clint oh my pen must be going dry.Anyway-Diania went too. We went to Grandma's when we came back -until church time.
Guess we might ship some Idaho hay in. Will be here Wednesday.
Grandma hasn't been feeling very well. Her legs have been bothering her. And she had to have Art work on her furnace again.
The Bishop wasn't feeling well yesterday & seems so funny not to see him at church.
Alice J didn't go back to work. Kent is working for Moss now-they lost 1/2 their spuds-freeze.

Jan 10,1959 from Karene to Zelda
Dear Sis,
I neglected getting your card out yesterday.
Your most welcome letter came.
Hope it is warmer now. We have had beautiful spring days here lately. The sun is so nice. The wind has been blowing at Blanches-she dried her clothes well. We had a little breeze here this morning is all.
Went to Missoula to Preparation meeting yesterday-it was cold, wet and windy there.
Well, I'll write a letter one day.
Love Ma

Hi Honey: It seems such a long time already since we were giggling and teasing. How is school-like Barry said last nite, 'same 'ole grind. But I think he'd rather be in school than outside all day. Course it's different with Cheryl Ann. She didn't have anything to do. She hated to go back yesterday. And had to run to the bus again this morning. She went out to Widla's after school tonite, then in to the basketball game. And I hope she went to Mutual. She will stay with Grandma tonite. Barry didn't plan to go to Mutual-says there isn't much for the boys anymore. He went to Charlo last nite for Basketball practice. I guess they aren't going to use the gym her anymore. Art sputtered about having to look up and didn't do it the last time, so they just made arrangements to use the church gym over there on Monday nites.
I didn't do anything yesterday. I felt so miserable Sunday nite. I took a sleeping tablet and a pain killer and I just wanted to sleep yesterday. Dad fed before he came in, so it was late;so he didn't come for dinner until the kids came home;so he doesn't know how really lazy I was. And today I have been working on the record book and getting material ready for preparation meeting, Friday in Missoula.
The weather has moderated considerably. It was 10'above last nite. And a breeze is blowing tonite, so we may have mud again soon. Pleasant though.
Mom said to tell you thanks for your bed. They still have the blues.
How many roommates do you have now? Have you seen Alvah-or have I asked you before. Well-no news around here. Nite
Love me

April 17,1959 to Zelda from Karene and Cheryl Ann

Dear Zelda:
We hope you will have a nice birthday. We wish you were here, we would have a cake and some ice cream. We hope you will have some without us anyway.
Are you still having sunshine?
We have a variety of weather. Some spring, some fall, some winter. However, today has been quite nice, the sun was shining this morning, and it clouded up some this afternoon.
Cheryl Ann was out most all morning; she rode her horse this morning, helping Dad move some sock. She thinks Windyday will grow to be a nice horse. She says maybe it is a good thing he isn't trained, she can train him to suit herself.
I spose you are wondering what the deal is with the typewriter. We are trying out a new Olympia. It has a 13" carriage. It works quite well with genealogy sheets. I fold the left side under an inch. I have been saying all the time I wanted a 25" carriage; But Dad says these machines are well built, and they only come in this wide a width And they didn't have a Remington in. So we are trying this one out. The man will be out one day next week.
Barry went to play practice tonite.
He will probably try to get someone else to bring Cheryl Ann home, so he and Judy can go to the show.
Good morning! How are you this morning!
We are all fine. Dad was sleepy last nite so we went to bed. He has had a hard time to sleep the last week. I think he has been going to bed to early at least the last two nites it has been later and he has slept better.
Barry brought Cheryl Ann home. Then he had to take Judy home, and it always takes so long to say goodnite to her. So this morning he didn't want to get up and Dad wanted him out a bit early, to help move some cattle that got out of where they are sposed to be. But he is eating breakfast now.
I can make more mistakes than anyone. Don't count them. And I sound like a woodpecker.
I see Cheryl Ann made some in her letter to.
Dad started a letter yesterday then someone used it for scratch paper, but I'll cut that off and send it. He may try it again.
Oh, I forgot, Susann came out with Cheryl Ann last nite. I think she must be going to stay until Sunday, judging from the clothes she had over her arm and I had so many things for Cheryl Ann to do. Now the stove drawers will have to wait another week. And I have a heaping basket of ironing to do. And I must go to school at three this afternoon.
And go with Dad for a load of hay this morning.
I have had a sad time with the song for the convention. Dilworths were called to Idaho or Utah because of the death of Mary's brother. So I didn't even have the book to write a part in for Faye. And I had such a time trying to get Don on the phone even; but finally got him yesterday. But he won't be able to play for them as he has to go to Hamilton that day. So, guess I'll ask Valiera to play. It is going to take a number from the Ward. Helen, Faye, Sisn Neilson, and Baliera; and two of them have classes in Sunday School And I'll have to have someone give the lesson in my class to. Then all of them are sposed to come down in the afternoon.
How do I settle on or I should say, how I peck away.
I'd better go and see why it is taking Barry so long to get going. He doesn't seem to think he should do anything extra.
We do hope you have a nice birthday!
Dad says you can buy some dress shoes.
Did you get some "work" shoes?
A box will follow with a few little things in it.
Our love The Family
Oh yes, Mr. Coooper is going to be the new Superintendent in Ronan. he was one of my old teachers. The Blue Knights got second place in teh talent show in Charlo, playing "Talk of the Town."
Bob Schleip was elected president of the Volunteer Fire Department.
Cecile Coulter Arends has a baby boy.
Dr. H.K. Newburn will take over the duties of President of Montana State University.
Seems like there was something else I had in mind to tell you but I have forgotten what it was.
Dear Zelda:
I am glad you enjoyed your visit with mom, and we sure hoped she would get he mumps, but I guess she had the luck. Don't miss her too much. How is all your pets and yourself?
The cats are all doing all rights. And jigger was lost when mom wasnt around. i traded Penny for a horse named Windy day he is a sorrow but is not as pretty as Penny. It is an Arabian horse and is a lot smaller than Penny, and hasnt had a bridle or a saddle on.
I rode Penny but she is hard to catch.
Today I am out of school because it is Parent Teachers Conference.
Dad is visiting with the P.C.A. right now.
Tonight I am going to a skating party with the school class.
I hope you don;t get mixed up reading this, because it is very mixed up, and there is a lot of mistakes in it.
This is a very beautiful day but it is muddy because it rained a partly snowed yesterday.
I rode Windyday today;do you know who I mean?
I drove the tractor today for daddy who was unloading some hay too the calves in the bullpen.
I had to do th e dishes because she did the morning dishes and mom had a headache. Barry came home and caught his horse as usual. We are doing spring plowing and Barry does the milking. Sometime I feed the calves. I guess Barry is going to play practice so he is going to go to the show if he can get me a ride home.

My Dear Zelda:
I really don't have to make the phone call up in stamps and paper. I just am too slow for anything. I went to Missoula again Sunday-then there was no genealogy teacher. And Me wasn't there so I could ask him what I was 'sposed to.
I wasn't feeling very good.Decided I wouldn't go to church, but I did. I was pooped;beside being broke in the middle if you know what I mean. so, I took a sleeping pill and went to bed. I didn't even hear Dad come to bed. I felt pretty rugged Monday A.M., went back to bed after getting Dad's breakfast on. Poor Barry had to get his own and so did Cheryl Ann. And she hurried around and had the breakfast work done, when I finally got up;expecting to have to wash dishes. But I didn't move around very much all day.
This morning I had the washing finished by 10:30. At eleven we went to Missoula. There was no school today, a teachers meeting. And a funeral. So, Barry went to see the bone cracker. Cheryl Ann & I went shopping. She got material, for me to make her a dress to.I tried to find some black dress shoes-ended up with pointed toes-which I swore I'd never wear.
We didn't get home 'till 6:15, so the poor cows were wondering why so late. Dane called-evidently Barry was 'sposed to be at play practice-he must not have known about it. He has a small part in the Junior play-a doctor, no less.
Had a letter from Mom.
Guess they have had a rough time-
Donna has a divorce now; Harold is 'sposed topay her $200 a month. Lorraine was rather against Dana; Mom said she would og with Harold, but she has it too easy at home. She must really be a nasty one. i know her temper and disposition. But Mom must remember that Dana was nearly the same when she was that age. And all the folks have done for her, she doesn't even call them. Mom said she made up her mind Charles and Dorothy could call them once-it had been two weeks and they hadn't heard anything from them. Dad must be worrying.
Mom is quite concerned. She would like him to go away for a month the Salt Lake or to Aunt Lauras. She says theyjsut don't know how to get thru to the kids anymore. I just think it would be a good thing if they left there. My opinion.
I don't know how to write, hardly. I can't sympathize too much one way or 'th otehr.
Well, to more pleasant subjects. I 'spose by now you have seen, talked adn visited with Gary. I had to make myself acquainted with him Sunday nite. I spose Page just figured I'd known him. Dad spoke to him, but he didn't seem to want ot talk-Gary, I mean, so Dad felt rather bad I think. I asked him if Gary knew wo he was.
We are wondering if the fellow from Spring City-is tall?
Don't know why this paper is cut. Some memory,
I forgot to get stationary today.
The funeral I mentioned we for Mr. Crump, He was operated on several weeks ago-developed pneumonia, then hepatitis and just couldn't make it. His wife has been in the hospital with it too. There have been so many deaths in Ronan lately.
And Mrs. Louise Spoaner- died and I didn't know it until after her funeral.
Valeria is out again.
Ray Jansen, Dale-in fact all the Bishopric has been sick and away from =church one Sunday. Even the clerks. There has been so much flu around. and mumps-I'm keeping my fingers crossed in hopes Cheryl Ann wouldn't have them for conference.
Tell Colene it was good to hear her say "hi". But the voice I loved to hear was 'sleepy 'uh'. Sorry to get you up, when you don't get enuf anyway, but I couldn't wait longer. I tho't you had a cold. Hope exams weren't too bad. I'm out of paper-so-I'll send loads of love-Mom

Dear Zelda.
Have you done your washing and ironing?
How did you spend the day, did you go to the lake?
Hos do you feel about the farm, shall we keep it?
Has it been raining?
Have they been able to hay on Joe's place?
How are the kids?
I'll have to make a copy of the questions I ask,uh.
Things are the same here. We have been waiting to hear about Miller's house. Lucille had her baby, a boy, she is in Quincy withe her Mother. Reed won't be home until Saturday; so we can't find out anything. Baily's house is empty. Mr. Byler was up to see Dad- I would rather have Millers house. I just hope we don't have to wait too long and miss both.
Thompsons have gone to Wenatchee;their house is vacant.Mrs. Baker says they sold it. Mrs. Thompson told Dad they hadn't so I don't know.I f we had a trailer house, we could move it in on Humphrey's farm; Jay & Marcell will rent theirs. It is not so nice; but we could get by, for awhile. So, we are still in a jackpot.
It was really hot, while we were away-107, and the wind blew continually. Mom and Dorthy were about ready to thumb their way, to somewhere.
We washed Monday nite, and Tuesday. Mom went to sew for the Relief Society, Tuesday P.M.. She and Dorthy went to the show Tuesday nite. We were just going to bed, when the adjuster came to see the car. They all had to go to town; so it was late when we got to bed. I mended sox yesterday.
It was Jerry's birthday yesterday and we were invited over for his cake and ice cream last nite.
Duane was here, Monday evening. He stayed to visit half-an-hour. Seems very sensible. Have you heard from him, he took your adddress.
The Mormons are having a celebration at Park Lake, today.
the men are working. Dorthy has an appointment with the Doctor at noon. Sounds like I'll be baby sitter again.
Dad said Lyme was asking about you, Sunday; wanted to make a date with you today.
Charles has gone over. He is on a boat. Ruth doesn't fuss too much about him. She wants to see the boat he is on.
Have you heard anything about Dana & Harold?
I'm sending a box-I couldn't find one to put the case in. You'll have to check it with your case-or mail it. Be sure to tie it well.
I'd better close now.
Hoping to hear from you.
Love Mom
Sis-when I got your dress out-they hadn't taken the spots out, so I'm going to send it back. I am sending your slacks-I didn't know they were dirty. And your belt.
THIS WAS A SMALL LETTER WITH THE ABOVE LETTER
Dear Cheryl Ann:
How are you? Do you still walk arount? How are your babies? Do you see Vickie and Fran?
Jimmie comes down every day or so, to see if you are home. He said, to Dorathy, yesterday, "well, the car is home" So, she told him you were coming on the bus. Jerry adn Billie miss seeing you too.
Are you Being a good girl?
Is Zelda?
Have you ridden the horse yet?
Are your going to write me a letter?
I hope so,
Love Mommie

I'm not much good at writing, but I'll try.
The drive in Theater is open now I've been out there. The only thing I've seen most of the movies out there.
I went to work the Monday after I came back.
I notice there was a different car at you're place so I never stop.
I poses(?) you have a good time.
I see it time to go to work so I guess I'll be seeing you.

the men are working.

Are you Being a good girl?
Is Zelda?
Have you ridden the horse yet?
Are your going to write me a letter?

Dear Zelda
I'm not much good at writing, but I'll try.
The drive in Theater is open now I've been out there. The only thing I've seen most of the movies out there.
I went to work the Monday after I came back.
I notice there was a different car at you're place so I never stop.
I poses(?) you have a good time.
I see it time to go to work so I guess I'll be seeing you.
Love Duane
